Abstract

There are lots of connections between fashion and art. From the 19th century to today, by separating themselves from other handicraftsmen and tailors fashion designers presented themselves as artists and they claimed that they belonged to the world of high art instead of belonging a mercantile world which is related to handcrafting; and in other cases they became a part of the art movements and produced fashion products by applying modern art movements’ principles and dynamics to their designs.

In this study, the interaction between art movements occurred during the first decades of the 20th century and fashion was subjected. From these art movements Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Constructivism was related to fashion directly. Cubist artists directed their pictorial research to the flatness of canvas and geometrical forms which shape the world; analogously in cloth designs of this period, the surface of the cloth was used by purging from decoration and the human body was covered by geometrical pieces of fabric. Surrealist artists used mannequins and clothes as an art medium; additionally fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli applied the principles of Surrealism to her cloth designs. The artists participated in Futurism and Constructivism attempted to construct a new society; therefore they offered very fresh ideas for cloth design. The interactions between these art movements and fashion were investigated throughout the study by samples.
