Abstract
Svaneti is an important region also included in the UNESCO list with its architectural examples, music, folklore, icons, woodworking, metalworking, inscriptions, weaving, tower style houses and other different features. Traditional Mestia houses and towers, which are at the forefront of these unique features of the region, are structures that reflect the characteristic elements of Georgian civil architecture and traditional lifestyle. Despite the value and importance of the buildings, there are no comprehensive studies documenting the architectural elements of the region in the literature. For this reason, the traditional architectural features of the Svan house and towers in the city of Mestia within the traditional residential architecture of the Georgian Svaneti Region were examined in this study. With this work, it is aimed to fill the gap in the literature by identifying Mestia field and introducing the architectural features of its houses and towers which has a unique culture. This work consists of three phases: determination, research, and evaluation. In the determination phase, the study area is determined, and the determinations and general characteristics of the sample group are explained. In the second stage, surveys of the buildings were made by making on-site observations, interviews, visualizations with photographs. In this direction, the architectural features of the buildings are explained. At the last stage, general analysis tables were created, and the findings were compared and examined. As a result of the examinations, inferences were made about the typologies, plan schemes, construction techniques and material properties of the Svan house and towers within the traditional Mestia residential architecture. As a result, suggestions were developed by making determinations about the houses and towers discussed.
