Abstract

The aim of this study is to document the diversity in the names of the faculties that provide art education in Turkish higher education institutions and to propose a plain naming that resolves the conceptual confusion caused by this diversity. Designed as a descriptive survey, the study examined the names of the art faculties admitting students in the 2019-2020 academic year through the statistics system of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and the official websites of the universities; the order in which the names emerged was traced through the dates in YÖK records. The study found 119 art faculties in 117 universities, named in nine different ways. Ninety-three of these faculties use the adjective “fine” in their names, while 26 combine the word “art” with “design”, “architecture” or “social sciences” instead. No faculty bears the name “Faculty of Art” alone. Whereas most other types of faculties name their field with a single, plain term, art faculties present the same content under different names, often merely by changing the order of the words. Taking into account the historical background of the term “fine arts”, which derives from eighteenth-century European aesthetics, the study proposes that these faculties be gathered under the name “Faculty of Art”.
