Öz

Günümüzde varlıklarını sürdüren toplumların tarihlerine bakıldığında sayısız mücadeleler yaşadıkları görülmektedir. Milletlerin, etnik grupların, ırkların vatandaşlık haklarını elde edebilmek için verdikleri uğraşlar içerisinde kadınlar da kendi varoluşlarını ortaya koyabilmek için sayısız zorluklarla karşı karşıya kalmışlardır. Fransız Devrimi ile tüm dünyada etkisini göstermeye başlayan sosyal dönüşüm kadınların da temel haklar çerçevesinde yasal haklarını elde etmelerinde harekete geçme farkındalığı yaratmıştır. Başta ABD olmak üzere dünyanın farklı yerlerinde dernekler kurmuşlar, çeşitli eylemler ve toplantılar düzenlemişlerdir. “Süfrajetler” olarak tarihe geçen bu hareketin öncü liderleri, kadınların özellikle oy kullanma hakkını elde etmeleri için uğraşmışlardır. Toplumun farklı kesimlerinde yer alan pek çok kadının desteğini alan süfrajetler bu eylemlerin yanında korse içine hapsolan bedenlerini ve hareket zorluğuna neden olan kıyafetlerinden de kurtulmak istemişlerdir. İlk kez Amelia Jenks Bloomer tarafından giyilen “şalvar benzeri kısa büzgülü pantolon” ile reform kıyafetinin de temellerini atmışlardır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Süfrajet hareketi ile toplumsal haklarını elde etmeye çalışan kadınların aynı zamanda Kıyafet Reformu’ndaki tarihsel süreci ve modaya etkilerini ortaya koymaya çalışan derleme araştırmasıdır.

Abstract

Reform Dress as a Symbol of Silent Resistance in the Nineteenth Century Sufrage Movement

When we look at the history of societies which maintain their existence till today, it is seen that countless struggles have been faced. Women had to encounter many difficulties in order to express their existence among other difficulties fought by nations, ethnics and races to get their citizenship. The social change depending upon the French Revolution encountered all through the world, raised awareness and encouraged women to take action for the fundamental right of citizenship, voting. Primarily in the USA, women founded associations, made various activities and organized meetings at different cities in the world. Head leaders of this movement which named in the history as “suffragettes”, struggled especially for women’s right to vote. Along with this movement Suffragettes receiving support from women in the different segments of the society, wanted to free their bodies which were imprisoned in “corsets” and to take off the clothes which caused difficulties while moving. As a result of the clothing style presented by Amelia Jenks Bloomer, which was accredited as the Turkish style clothing then, the grounds for clothing reform were pepared. This study is a compilation research which aims to reveal the historical Victorian Dress Reform of the nineteenth century caused by simple women trying to get their social rights and the effect of this reform on the lady’s fashion so called as Bloomers Dress.
