Abstract
Ceramic Works as Tomb Elements
Death is a fact of life, a powerful element that shapes the cultural structure of societies. From the majestic mausoleums to the urn pots where the ashes rest, ceramics have existed for many times as an accompaniment to this last rest. These objects left to us from history are like a door to the past. Ceramic material is prone to vanishing due to its fragility, and as archaeological excavations have shown to us, it is also a material that is close to eternity due to its indestructible nature. Its structure, which does not lose its color and form as long as this is not intervened, makes it an ideal tool to accompany the body remains. In this research the relation of ceramics, clay with death and its place in the culture is explained. Specific to ceramic samples, containers where the body of the deceased is found, or ceramic works samples indicating to the tomb were examined. Although ceramic offering vessels have been in tombs for ages, they are excluded from this study. Ceramic examples: urns, sarcophagi, mausoleums, and grave markers are handled respectively.
