Abstract

Corset in Modern-Day Sculpture

From past to present, the concept of gender among the society has built up a masculine system over the body and that system overwhelmed the perception of female body and clothing. Both the fluctuation of female image according to time, religious discipline, social values and individual habits rebuild the fashion and the type of consumption objects. Corset was commonly used in the England of Victorian age to put an emphasis on the breasts and hip, which are intrinsic to the female body. Apart from that, it was used to demonstrate the female body slimmer than it normally is and help women to stand upright. Corset, which passivates the women both physically and mentally, lost its validity along with the social reforms and feminist movements in Europe, towards the end of 19th century. During 1960’s; the artists, who were looking for new tools of expression in the world of art, which had witnessed a radical change, tried to produce genuine works. Corset is still interpreted at the hands of different artists with different materials and approaches. This study illustrates how the corset is interpreted by the modern sculptors.
