Abstract
Feet and Shoes in Art and Cultural History
This research is about the special meanings of feet and shoes in the history of culture and art. The meaning of the foot itself, beyond being a part that serves only the integrity of the body, constitutes the main axis of the work. In this sense, the meanings of the foot and the shoe in different contexts such as class, gender, spiritual depths and traumas were investigated. Artistic productions accompanying cultural differences also enabled us to interpreting the cultural history content in question with examples from the history of art. In this sense, some examples revealing cultural and social dynamics are presented on the axis of topics such as being barefoot, wearing valuable or worthless shoes, shaping shoes and even feet. In the treatment of religious subjects in the history of art, the differences in representation depending on the way the foot is shown are also included with examples. In modern and contemporary art, feet and shoes as an image in the context of death, fetish, Oedipus complex and genocide are examined under thematic headings.
