1613501354 ANALYSIS OF YURDAER ALTINTAS POSTERS ON THE BASIS OF TYPOGRAPHIC SYSTEMS

The continuous transformation of typography as a means of written and visual expression covers a long period in the history of communication. The triggering factors of this dynamic process are industrial and political developments, which are known to also lay the groundwork for new understanding and movements in the field of art and design. In this process, it is seen that the use of typography especially in poster design has been shaped for various purposes. While writing sometimes fulfills its function of conveying information, sometimes it has turned into visual images in addition to this function and has become an important element of the design. This variety of uses makes it possible to define and apply typography on the basis of categorical systems as an element of design. In this research, textual arrangements in the poster designs of Yurdaer Altıntaş, one of the leading names of graphic design in Turkey were analyzed on the basis of typographic systems. The research was carried out by document analysis method. The scope of the research was determined by the maximum diversity method, which is one of the purposeful sampling methods. Within the scope of the research, all 104 posters that can be accessed from Yurdaer Altıntaş's personal website were examined. The posters included in the study were analyzed using the categorical content analysis method. The systems in Kimberly Elam's book "Typographic Systems" were used as criteria in the analysis of Altıntaş's posters. When all the posters included in the research are examined, it is seen that Altıntaş has absorbed the modern graphic design movements that started to develop in Europe and America since the early 1900s and the innovative typography language of these movements. It is seen that Altıntaş successfully combined with its unique style using both local and universal motifs. Accordingly, the designer did not only use typographic elements as texts that convey information, but also effectively utilized them as visual figures when necessary to strengthen his expression.
