1566407636 STORIES ENGRAVED ON FABRIC

This study intends to enrich the strata of the meaning of objects that have a place in daily life and reflect their adventure on their way to become direct materials used in art. Modern artists who incline to use the elements of fabric and textile as materials compose the main axis of the study. Objects of daily life first appeared in art at the beginning of twentieth century in the form of cubist collage and these objects have been approached in conceptual dimensions since 1960’s. While examples of reproduction for fabric and textile over fabric such as sateen curtains, flannel dresses and canvas embroidered pillow slips have a rather wide artist spectrum in modern art, Gözde İlkin who places these materials in the main axes of her art. During the production process İlkin embraces the fabric that belongs relatively to the house and reflects gender, body and her own story through fabric; at the same time embodying a feminist approach in her work.
In this sense, the study approaches applications over fabric -regarded to be daily skills defined as “hand crafts”- via artist who carries them to modern art. In this path, feminist art and artist experiences that nourish these artists have been addressed and the harsh social messages that are contrary to the softness of these pieces of fabric, each of which transform into a new life space, are strived to be interpreted.
