1560252446 CHRONOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF MEN’S SUITS IN TERMS OF STYLE AND FORM

History of fashion has been shaped by the geography people have lived in, their culture, and the influence on the clothing styles of people by the social, political and economic events they have experienced. It is known that the characteristics of women’s clothing have experienced a more prominent, more dominant and faster change in comparison to men’s clothing. In men’s clothing, on the contrary, these characteristics have reached our time with less dominant and slower changes through time. The changes in style and form that have frequently changed in women’s clothing towards fashion trends took place in a longer process and more slowly in men’s clothing. Usage of men’s suits that are used as indispensable classics of men’s clothing in our period, where fashion trends and clothing styles show an incredible speed of change, may be dated back to the 17th century.
This study was planned and carried out with the purpose of investigating men’s suits which are the classical and main parts of men’s clothing in terms of their design elements and how the changes in style and form due to aesthetical preferences, fashion trends, social changes, cultural activities and technological developments in the process of history of fashion took place. The different silhouettes of men between the periods, which have changed based on fashion movements by changes made on size ratios depending on the trends of those days, were interpreted based on a review of the literature.
The study used the screening method. The data of the study were collected by scanning the literature related to and visual-written sources on men’s clothing fashion that changed in the period of 1900-2000. At the first stage, the visual data were chronologically categorized, and the categorized visuals analyzed based on their style, form and silhouette characteristics in line with the fashion of the period. The details of changes in the silhouette of men in the scope of the determined characteristics were supported and presented by the drawings made by the researchers.
