1522262369 POSITION AND IMPORTANCE OF DOME IN MOSQUE ARCHITECTURE

Currently, the opinion of an immutable mosque typology with a dome and minarets is dominant. However, it is obvious that a dome or minarets are not a necessity through the historical development of mosque architecture. But the aforementioned formation is regarded as a necessity. The article will discuss the use of dome through the development of mosque architecture, position and stylistic features of the dome in modern mosques, and it will also exemplify the subject through a design. Primarily, the article will focus on the development of mosque architecture through history. It will also study how dome concept was approached, how it is used in different geographies, eras and within technological possibilities, its symbolic meaning, and the effect it created. The second section will comment on how the dome concept is approached in contemporary mosques. In this context, contemporary mosque expression will be highlighted. The approach to the dome concept, stylistic deformations, and dimensional features will be conveyed through examples. Later, the subject will be exemplified with the one of the projects that was presented in Halide Edip Adıvar Complex National Architectural Project Competition designed by team members: Meltem Özçakı (leader), Yağız Ezer, Ali Derya Mutlu, Büşra Şık, Ecem Kocaarslan, Canan Ganiç and assistants: Mahmut Nimetoğlu, Kübra Çelik. As the presented project is a design that favors environmental data, approaches and evaluates dome within a context of contemporary design and with the current technological possibilities, it will be analyzed within the article.
