1521028222 SCHOOL UNIFORM IN CONTEMPORARY ART AS INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL MEMORY OBJECT

This article studies the ‘school uniform’ concept contained in the works of artists engaged in the production of contemporary art in Turkey. The school uniform, which is present in many individual, social and political areas, is basically a concept of belonging and representation, and these concepts are particularly associated with the state. In countries with nation-state ideology, such as Turkey, state wants to shape an individual through education and school uniforms are almost a part of the system representing the entire regime. Therefore, artists who question their past in Turkey, meet the school uniform in the childhood memories and use the school uniform in their works as a representation of their individual memories. Appearing in sometimes metaphorical, sometimes realistic narratives, the school uniform carries the traces of both individual and social memory. School uniform, which was addressed within this scope, was examined based on the works of Gülsün Karamustafa, Esra Ersen, Gözde İlkin, Serkan Çalışkan and Merve Üstünalp.
