1510044481 JAPANISM EFFECT ON THE WORKS OF JAMES ABBOTT McNEILL WHISTLER

This study focuses on the influence of Japanese painting art on Western painting art. The first encounter with Japanese art and culture was the result of increased commercial relations in the 19th century. The Impressionists, who are squeezed from the classical art scene in the West, are searching for new subjects while the Japanese painting art has given them new doors. Western artists who have met Japanese art and Japanese cultural objects remain influenced by Japaneseism. McNeill Whistler is one of the first painters to come into contact with Japaneseism, which means intense interest in Japanese art and culture. Whistler's process of accumulating Japanese print paintings as a collection continues with the use of Japanese painting art in his paintings, combining his philosophy with his art. After the necessary literature search for the purpose of the work, the information reveals the effect of Japaneseism in Whistler's works. The work is limited to examples of Whistler's work in which the subject, form, color, composition are heavily influenced by Japanese influence. The document analysis from the qualitative research methods was designed to work.
