1768167681 REBII GORBON’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO TURKISH CERAMIC ART AND INDUSTRY

This study examines the contributions of architect and ceramic artist Rebii Gorbon to Turkish ceramic art, design and industry, the establishment and activities of the Gorbon Ceramic Factory. The research method was carried out through literature review and interviews. The scope and limitation of the research include Rebii Gorbon's first steps in ceramic art, his artistic works and the first productions of the Gorbon Ceramic Factory. The subject addressed in the relevant study is important in terms of its contribution to the field of ceramic art. Born in Istanbul, Rebii Gorbon is among the important architects of the Republican Period and has made great contributions to art as a ceramic artist. Gorbon, who started producing his first ceramic vessels in the ceramic studio he established in the garden of his summer house in Mecidiyeköy in 1952, focused on decorative objects. He opened his first exhibition at the Beyoğlu Olgunlaşma Enstitüsü. After meeting Füreya Koral, he turned to works that are mainly art-oriented. It is known that he focused on materials, production technology and colors in his personal studies on Iznik tiles, which he focused on in the last years of his career. He conducted research on ceramics in various regions in Europe. During his trips to various regions of Anatolia such as Bozüyük and Bilecik, which are quite rich in terms of ceramic raw materials, and to Istanbul and its surroundings, he made researches on the history of ceramics and also conducted research on clay and kaolin quarries. Rebii Gorbon, who conducted various researches on ceramics both at home and abroad, played an important role in the development of the Turkish Ceramic Industry by establishing the Gorbon Ceramic Factory in 1958. Rebii Gorbon established his second factory in Gebze in 1985. Rebii Gorbon, who left the factory to his son Aziz Gorbon, passed away in 1993. As a result, Gorbon continued his ceramic adventure, which he started by producing decorative objects in 1952, with the factories he established. The Gorbon brand, which bears his surname, has created a wide range of products ranging from tableware to single-piece ceramic objects, from souvenirs to Ottoman tiles. Although the factory products have a wide repertoire in the production process, it is seen that Gorbon mostly focuses on building materials in production and stands out in this field. This situation gives rise to the idea that it is closely related to his being an architect.
