Historically, the term palimpsest refers to parchment that has been erased and rewritten. However, in contemporary contexts, it has evolved into a metaphor associated with memory, temporality, and layered narratives across disciplines such as art, architecture, and literature. In ceramic art, the concept of palimpsest is applied through techniques such as reconstruction, engraving, layered glazing, and transfer methods, allowing artists to establish a dialogue between past and present as well as between different artistic works. This study aims to examine the conceptual and technical dimensions of the palimpsest in ceramic art. Throughout history, ceramic art has provided a medium for the creation of layered narratives through various techniques. Artists have utilized these approaches to emphasize notions of memory and temporality. This research employs qualitative methods, including literature review, visual analysis of artworks, and data obtained from exhibition bulletins, to explore the applications of the palimpsest concept in ceramic art. By analyzing the works of national and international artists, the study demonstrates how the palimpsest offers a multi-layered interpretative framework within ceramics. In this regard, the conceptual and technical aspects of palimpsest methodologies in contemporary ceramic art have been evaluated. Techniques such as engraving, layered glazing, narrative textures, and printing methods contribute to making temporal traces and memory transmission visible on ceramic surfaces. The inherently stratified nature of ceramic production renders its works inherently palimpsestic. In ceramic art, the palimpsest emerges as a continually rewritten and transformed artistic language that bridges past and present. The concept of palimpsest in ceramic art maintains its relevance both conceptually and technically, providing artists with a creative means of expression. As a practice that integrates diachronic and synchronic traces, palimpsest remains an essential artistic approach in ceramics, enriched by new narratives. Moreover, the application and interpretation of palimpsest in ceramic art have the potential to influence artistic practices and expand the conceptual framework of contemporary ceramics.
