1768165913 AN ASSESSMENT OF PIONEERS AND THE NEW GENERATION IN CONTEMPORARY TURKISH CERAMIC ART

Turkish ceramic art holds a profound history rooted in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods, where it developed a distinct aesthetic identity through architectural ornamentation and functional objects. With the onset of the Republican era, ceramics evolved beyond traditional craft production, engaging with interdisciplinary approaches as a form of artistic expression. During this period, pioneering artists redefined ceramics as a fine art, reinterpreting traditional motifs through a modernist lens. This shift established a contemporary foundation, diversifying the discipline's technical, aesthetic, and conceptual dimensions. Contemporary young artists continue this legacy by integrating traditional techniques with innovative materials and methods, thereby expanding the boundaries of the medium. Influenced by global art practices, these artists articulate individual and cultural narratives through original expressions. This study analyzes the conceptual and technical transformation of Turkish ceramic art from the early Republican period to the present, focusing on the dichotomy between pioneer and new-generation artists. It critically examines changes in materials, shaping methods, and decorative elements in relation to the artistic, cultural, and technological dynamics of their respective eras. Additionally, the evolution from traditional methods to experimental approaches is evaluated within the context of individual practices, global trends, post-industrial technological advancements, and the academic institutionalization of ceramic education. Consequently, this research offers a comprehensive evaluation of the historical trajectory of contemporary Turkish ceramic art across two distinct generations.
