1754467839 TRACES OF FREUD'S THEORY OF THE UNCONSCIOUS IN SARAH LUCAS'S WORKS: AN ANALYSIS THROUGH ART AND SPACE PERCEPTION

This article examines the traces of Sigmund Freud's theory of the unconscious in Sarah Lucas's art through the relationships her artworks establish with spatial contexts. The primary focus of the research is to reveal how Freudian concepts manifest in Lucas's works and how this embodiment deepens through the spaces in which they are exhibited. Key Freudian concepts such as the unconscious, desire, repression, and the phallus are strongly felt in Lucas's installations, particularly those centered around sexuality and gender. However, the power of these images is not only reinforced through content but also through the relationships they establish with the space. Exhibitions held by Lucas in historically significant spaces with a strong psychoanalytic context, such as the Freud Museum, transform the meaning of the artwork and layer the relationship with the viewer. In this context, the interaction between the artworks and the space offers the viewer a psychoanalytic experience, with the space becoming a physical extension of the unconscious. The study aims to rethink the function of space in Lucas's works based on Freud's views on the artist and the artwork. Ultimately, this article evaluates Lucas's works not only in terms of aesthetics or social critique but also through a space-based psychoanalytic reading, contributing to the experiential dimension of contemporary art.
