This research was conducted with the aim of developing an instructional model for beginner-level kanun (a traditional Turkish string instrument) education in the music departments of Fine Arts High Schools (FAHS) in Turkey. The study aimed to examine this model comprehensively by gathering the opinions of teachers and students and to provide recommendations that would contribute to kanun education in FAHS based on the data obtained. The research employed a case study model, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 10 kanun teachers working at various FAHS across Turkey. The findings of the research revealed that the majority of FAHS teachers supported the development of a curriculum that integrates the traditional Turkish music sound system with the tempered sound system. This study highlights that the current curriculum in FAHS does not fully meet the needs of students in kanun education, and teachers resort to various methods to address these shortcomings. There is a noticeable tendency to teach both Turkish and Western music sound systems together in kanun education, which supports the potential of the kanun as both a traditional and universal instrument. However, methods such as transposition studies and the simultaneous teaching of two different sound systems, aimed at helping students harmonize with other vocational courses, present certain challenges for both teachers and students. It was found that beginner-level students benefit from studies centered on the "do" pitch in terms of visual learning, making this approach a frequently preferred method. Additionally, it was determined that solfeggio (bona) studies are an effective method for overcoming the difficulties students face during the performance process. For advanced classes, it is recommended to transition to solfeggio studies using the transposition method once students have achieved technical proficiency. In conclusion, it is evident that kanun education should be structured in a balanced manner, encompassing both traditional and universal music education, and that the current curriculum does not fully support these methods. Therefore, it is recommended that the curriculum for kanun education be revised and reorganized to alleviate the challenges faced by teachers and students. Furthermore, developing etudes that are more suitable for students' vocal ranges and integrating these etudes into the educational process could be a significant step in enhancing students' technical and musical skills.
