1733922043 TOMB INSCRIPTIONS IN THE YUMURTACI MOSQUE GRAVEYARD

Izmit, the capital of the Kingdom of Bithynia, formerly known as Nicomedia, became one of the major cities of the Roman Empire. The city was mentioned as Iznikmid in early Ottoman sources, it took the name Izmid towards the middle of the 19th century, and Izmit in the early 20th century,as it is today. With the construction and development that took place in the city during this period, many mosques, caravanserias, fountains, soup kitchens, schools, baths, etc. structures have been built. Yumurtacı Mosque, which dates back to the 17th century Ottoman period and has survived to the present day, is an example of these structures. In the article titled “Tomb Inscriptions in the Yumurtacı Mosque Graveyard”, 20 grave inscriptions in the graveyard were examined. Each tombstone was handled separately and the texts on the stones were ezamined in terms of Arabic Calligraphy and then photographed and explained. In the historical order of the inscriptions; Information about dimensions, text transcriptions, date ranges, stylistic features, type of writing and types is given. The locations of all inscriptions have been determined on the sketch. In addition, 59 broken inscription pieces were identified in the graveyard, the harmony of these broken pieces was studied and the texts were transceibed into modern Turkish. With this article, we tried to bring the values of our cultur existence in the Yumurtacı Mosque graveyard to the academic literature and aimed to draw attention to the maintenance and repair of both intact inscriptions and broken stones.
