1729518229 A READING OF THE MEANING CODES IN FİKRET MUALLA’S DRAWINGS (APRIL 10-MAY 14, 1953)

In this study, the aim is to analyze five works from the 27 drawings made by Fikret Mualla in his notebook while hospitalized at the Sainte-Anne psychiatric hospital in Paris from April 10 to May 14, 1953, in terms of their meaning codes. The research employs qualitative research methods, using document analysis as a data collection tool. While attempting to interpret the works, the social, political, and economic developments of the era, as well as Fikret Mualla's life and letters, have been examined, and the effects of his life on his drawings have been compared with the effects of the contemporary context. In these drawings, animal figures have been used as a means of representation, with pigs, bears, sheep, rams, and donkeys playing a prominent role in the artist's satire. It can be said that the symbolic representation used by Fikret Mualla in his satire is shaped by the problems he faced in his personal life, alongside the political, economic, and military developments in Turkey and the world, as well as the delusions and fears he experienced.
