Bekir Arıs (1933-2020); one of the leading zurna players of Sivas. In Turkish Folk Music, ‘açış’ is generally an improvisational form of performance. Although ‘açış’ are performed before or between vocal songs such as unmetered folk song or metered folk song, they can also take place before or between instrumental songs. Qualitative research method and descriptive survey model were used in the research. The data of the research were obtained through literature review, document analysis and archive scanning techniques. The audio recording sample reached in line with the data obtained was notated and subjected to content analysis. In this study, a performance of ‘açış’ by Bekir Arıs with zurna was analyzed in terms of the use of ‘blowing techniques’ and ‘ornamentation techniques’. With this analysis, it is aimed to elaborate Arıs's zurna performance. In addition, the research is important in terms of being the first article study in the field on Bekir Arıs's performance characteristics and contributing to the research field on issues related to zurna performance and performers in Sivas region.
