The most important emotion that has enabled humans to survive throughout history is the feeling of fear. This emotion, which is at the source of gothic, is the human interest in the unknown, the incomprehensible, the supernatural, as well as the pleasure and excitement arising from this interest. The concept of gothic, which has found its place as a style in almost every branch of art, can be associated with several concepts such as fear, feeling of terror, excitement. From architecture to sculpture, from painting to cinema, gothic narratives and images established by combining with grotesque imagery are seen to have emerged during periods of crisis in society.
Today, Tim Burton films, which construct narrative by hybridising genres, are films in which gothic images and themes are frequently used. Within the scope of the study, 20 feature films directed by Burton were classified according to the themes determined in the context of the gothic concept. This classification was analysed by using Thematic Analysis with qualitative film analysis method in the context of main themes such as gothic spaces, entities, facts and phenomena and symbolic sub-themes that constitute them. It is aimed to determine both how the gothic style is represented in Tim Burton's cinema and what kind of gothic features Tim Burton's films have.
