1657729070 LYRICAL AND MUSICAL ANALYSIS OF TWO COMPOSITIONS OF ALI UFKÎ REGISTERED IN OXFORD BODLEIAN LIBRARY

One of Ali Ufkî’s three manuscrips on music is Mecmua-ı Saz ü Söz. Fifteen compositions, which are placed in the Mecmua-ı Saz ü Söz, belong to him. In addition, 544 vocal and instrumantal works expressing in the 16th and 17th century Ottoman music were notated in the Mecmua-ı Saz ü Söz. This work is very important document in terms of Turkish music history. However, there also works of the artist whose subject is not music. Therefore, experts on this subject have turned to new researches. Thus, Şükrü Elçin was reached mentioned the the work of Ali Ufkî called Gramatica, which is registered in the Oxford Bodleian library. Thus, he mentioned the existence of “Varsağı-der makam-ı Uşşak and “Türkî-berâ-yı fenâ Cihan” in the Gramatica which was written by Ali Ufkî.
Here, these two compositions are the main subject of our review. In this study, firstly, information is given about 17th century musical climate and the artist personality of Ali Ufkî. A general evaluation has been made about his understanding of music. In addition to music and lyrics analysis, maqam and rhythm analyzes are also made about two notes in this works.
The aim of this article is to: Many scientists such as Gültekin Oronsoy, Şükrü Elçin, Hakan Cevher and Cem Behar have done important studies about Ali Ufkî. Many scientists whose names we can not mention have made important studies on this subject. Studies are source on this subject. In addition, new research and examinations that can be rediscovered every day will provide a better understanding of contribution to Turkish music.
