1513214223 THE ELEMENT OF TEXTURE IN CONTEMPORARY CERAMICS ART

Texture can be defined as a structure forming the surface of objects that are available in the nature. Content exists with the organization of basic art elements in the creative process of every discipline of plastic arts. Being among these elements; texture is preferred by artists as a way of artistic expression. Art objects are created through not only these elements that are the principle stage of the creative process, but also distinctive physical properties of many materials that mediate artistic expressions. In this context, clay which is the main material of ceramics and different cooking techniques provide ample opportunities to the artist. Plastic structure of clay can imitate a number of organic and inorganic objects. In addition, some clay structures have textural differences that may diversify according to their compounds. These differences create a plastic language on the handwork via distinctive expression of their artists. In this article, it is aimed to examine the concept of texture only within the context of contemporary ceramic art because the subject which is handled is far-reaching. The definitions of texture are given and the classification of texture as visual and tactual is made according to art. In accordance with this classification, 9 examples of contemporary ceramic art in Turkey and around the world are examined. In this direction, it is concluded that in ceramic examples, the element of texture is imitated with ceramic materials through tactual and visual effects and diversified through ceramic glaze and firing methods.
