Coffeehouse culture, having a significant place in the Turkish community, made a great contribution to
the development of social and cultural life. Coffeehouses have never only been a place to drink coffee
or tea since the historical period till today. They have been places, where the encomiasts made their
performances, Karagoz and Hacivat games were played, intelligentsia like writers and poets presented
their works first to the public and got their opinions and games like backgammon and chess were
played. Coffeehouses can be characterized as social places, where people from any age and occupation
coming together in their free time, chatting to walk off from the stress of the day. Our cultural richness,
social life, traditions carry an important place for the artists in the Turkish Painting Arts, and these values
reflect to the Contemporary Turkish Paintings. Having an important place in the Turkish culture,
coffeehouses have been embraced as a subject and numerous works were created. Mehmet Basbug is
one of our artists who is fed from the Turkish culture and subjecting and emphasizing the values of the
coffeehouses. The artist has numerous valuable works for the protection of our socio-cultural richness
from the past till today and transmittal to the next generations. It has been thought that, analyzing and
interpreting the coffeehouse subjected paintings of Mehmet Basbug, will provide contribution to other
artists who are influenced from our culture and also to Contemporary Turkish Painting Arts.
