1455107981 TRANSITION FROM CONCEPT TO THREE-DIMENSION IN THE BASIC DESING EDUCATION

Design can be defined as a format that human minds create and/or the artworks on paper or screen within the output stage of an idea and the first sketches of an art or a craft. The basic design is preliminary to introduction to art and design students and it’s a discipline that aims students to develop a specific system of thought in their work of art by allowing them to get to know their own character. The lecture of the Basic Design is carried out in two stages: theory and practice. In theoretical process students, are given theoretical information about basic design elements and principles, in practice process there are two and three-dimensional studies for to understand these elements and principles.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the basic design lectures given in the freshman year of Fine Art Faculties, the conceptual practices used in contemporary art and to actualize the three-dimensional practice processes by means of concepts on an intellectual background. The postmodern discourses that emphasizes the intellectual processes, necessitates the search for new languages in art education. In this context this study focuses on students to shape their designs with an idea based solid background while offering new practice possibilities as a continuation of the holistic approach tried to be given at Bauhaus Design School in 20th century.
In this study, Basic Design, Basic Design Education, Concepts in Contemporary Art topics are discussed and examples of transition from concepts to three-dimension ın the basic design education are given. The sample of this study constitutes of the first semester Basic Design three-dimensional final projects of students from Gazi University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Visual Communication Design. As a result while Basic Design students perceive different orientations of contemporary art, they also learn to evaluate art and design with regard to current age. Students who are experiencing today’s art, experience new original possibilities of expression with manifestos based on concepts. This study offers idea based recommendations which are capable of reaching student’s all relevant studies for the basic design lectures.
