ABSTRACT
Education is the development of an individual’s behaviors and thoughts
undergoing constant change. Art education entails all the creative activities within the scope of Fine Arts both in and outside school, and it supports in nature the scientific
education. A variety of teaching methods have been used in art education, and a brief explanation of the subject followed by practice is now considered outdated and
insufficient in contemporary art education. Different methods have been tried since 1890s in the Western world, and “drama” which is the focus of this study, has widely been preferred as a method of
teaching. In our country, use of drama as a teaching method dates back to 1980s and before that it was part of the primary school curriculum for only two years between 1915-1917. Today, creative drama has been increasingly recognized as an important
and effective method of instruction in the field of education. This study demonstrates that teaching of art criticism within the scope of
Visual Arts lessons using “creative drama” is a more effective and successful method concerning students’ learning and interest in the subject matter compared to
“traditional” teaching methods.
Consequently, effective use of “creative drama” as a method of instruction could be considered as an important development in Turkish national education
system.
