1554838675 “DEATH” THEME IN DAMIEN HIRST’S ARTWORKS

Throughout history, man has lived with the fact that he was mortal and on the other hand he could not
accept it. For this reason, while fighting this reality that he could not accept during the ages, man searches
ways of being immortal and left behind immortal artworks. In other words, the relationship between the
fact of death and the effort to exist has sometimes determined the content of the work of art. From Renaissance
painting to contemporary art, there are examples of the theme of death. In this study, the death
theme that dominates Damien Hirst’s artworks was analyzed. In this context, four selected works of his
art (God alone knows, Mother and child (Divided), Saint Sebastian Exquisite Pain, away from the flock)
were evaluated together with art criticism and iconographic analysis techniques.
