1549452139 AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD IN CERAMIC: SHAPING BY DIPPING AN OBJECT IN THE SLIP

First things that spring to mind when traditional ceramic shaping techniques are mentioned such as shaping by hands, wheel throwing and casting. On the other hand, the method discussed in this article can be classified as an alternative shaping technique. The technique which does not have an obvious name in the literature will be mentioned as “Shaping by Dipping an Object in the Slip” throughout the text. Studies being conducted show that the technique is called “Slip Dipping” in English.
Casting slip is a term used for liquid clay. Casting technique is basically used as a mass production method for shaping by casting in a plaster mould. In the method of shaping by dipping an object in the slip, hence the name; the ceramic form is obtained from objects that are covered with slip, dried and then fired. Even though the term “dipping” is used, tools such as pistole and brush can also be used in this process. What actually matters is that the object or material is fully covered with slip. For this technique, there is a need for organic materials that can burn in a ceramic kiln or objects produced from these organic materials. Materials such as papers, cotton clothes, fabrics, natural fibers and sponges can be appropriate for the aforementioned technique.
The article will touch upon the points to be taken into consideration while applying the technique and the work by ceramic artists who produce using the technique and use the technique as a way of expression.
