1488461764 THE STATE OF THE CONTEMPORARY TURKISH CLARINET LITERATURE ON CLARINET: ASSASSMENTS BY PERFORMERS, EDUCATORS AND COMPOSERS

During the westernization movements in Turkey after it became a republic, music was given the utmost attention and a new understanding of music was developed. This attention gave way to opening new schools and raising new musicians. The clarinet that came into our country with military marching bands at the start of the 19th century, still subsists to this day thanks to the systematic conservatoire education. Today in conservatoires, clarinet players are raised for orchestras and many of them are known in the music world on an international level. Clarinet’s strong existance caused for a literature on clarinet to be born. Since the time of the pioneers of western classical music in Turkey, Turkish Five, tens of composers composed around a hundred works for clarinet. With 7 clarinet concerto and many chamber music compositions, Turkish literature on clarinet has an important treasure. In this work, which is a descriptive survey research, firstly contemporary Turkish literature works on clarinet is listed and then how many compositions for clarinet out of all concertos of Turkish composers are used in state concertos is studied. To gather information about the state of contemporary Turkish literature on clarinet, a semi structured interview that has included 2 composers that composed clarinet concertos, 3 clarinet educator working in conservatoires and 6 clarinet player that work in orchestras, has been conducted. In the light of the information that was gathered, it is understood that Turkish literature on clarinet is developing and more effort is needed for the new works in this field to be well known. For this field of literature to develop, orchestras’ giving more place to Turkish clarinet concertos is the key. Composers composing more works like solo sonatas and sonatins for clarinet and studies for clarinet that feed on Turkish themes will make up this important shortage in this field.
