1464810902 THE REFLECTIONS ON THE CINEMA OF THE GENDER ROLES IN THE 1980s IN TURKEY: THE MOVIE TEYZEM

Cinema can be considered as an important mediator tool in the meaning of the roles and statuses that a society determines and embraces for both sexes to be formed in the consciousnesses of the society. If thought that way, by based on family, society's smallest unit and individuals within the family, Halit Refiğ's movie Teyzem can be considered as a document which reflects the gender perceptions prevailing in Turkey in the 1980s. In the movie, characters, family and bonds between society without being overlooked, the transformation lived in the level of that period's society and the dialectic influence of these transformations on women and men, has been opened, widened and interpreted by linking together. Many features, which caused the transformation that Turkey faced in the referred periods, can be metioned. The movie Teyzem is constructed of different content layers which holds these features. In this study, although it is appropriate to read the different approaches in different contexts, the movie Teyzem was examined in the woman's perception of gender roles and identity context. In the shooting period of the movie Teyzem, the feminist movement in Turkey has begun to create a stronger debate. Therefore, the movie Teyzem was analyzed on the basis of feminist approach.
